This is the third post from a series bringing you insights from the interview with Elder Moraes, Java Champion, Red Hat Advocate, Mentor and Writer.

In our episode of The Out of the Box Developer podcast with Elder Moraes, we also talked about how important good habits are for a successful career as a software developer. We both agreed that having good habits every day is key to doing well and growing professionally over time.

Elder explained to us that “good habits are like the foundation of a successful career. They help you always do good work and keep learning new things.” He also said that these habits are not just about coding. They also include things like managing your time, learning new things, and talking to people clearly.

I added my thoughts during our conversation, saying that “in the fast-paced tech world, good habits are like anchors. They give you structure and help you stay focused and productive when things are changing quickly and there are many challenges.

Here are some important habits we talked about that can really help developers:

  • Always Keep Learning: Technology is always changing. It’s very important to spend time regularly learning about new technologies, tools, and ways of doing things that are aligned with your goals.
  • Manage Your Time Well: Good time management helps you meet deadlines, work on different projects, and still have time for your personal life. This is key and differentiate you from the most.
  • Practice Regularly: Coding regularly, even when you are not working on a project, helps you improve your skills and become better at solving problems.
  • Ask for Feedback: Asking for and using feedback from other developers and mentors can help you grow faster and find areas where you can improve.
  • Communicate Clearly: Being able to communicate well, both in writing and speaking, is important for working with others and explaining technical ideas simply. This is one of the key subjects in this blog and you will learn a lot on how to improve this skill with me.

And I would also add that good habits are like trains, first you need to know where you want to go, then “catch” the right train to get there. But in this case, YOU are the locomotive, and just like if the train stops, if you stop working on those good habits that lead you to growth, you won’t get anywhere.

Also, Elder gave us simple but important advice: “start with small habits, be consistent, and focus on building one good habit at a time. Slowly, these small changes will add up and make a big difference in your career.”

Cultivating good habits is really investing in your future as a successful developer and in your own life as well.

Would you like to deepen on these habits? If so, let me know in the comments section below and I will write an article for the most chosen topic.

In the next post, since now you have learned the importance of habits, I will bring about The Power of Consistency in a Developer’s Career, to understand that good habits along with consistency can take you to places you never imagined that it would be possible, and also the hints that Elder brought to us on this subject.
